Flams and Drags

Flams and drags are rudiments that add texture, weight, and expression to your playing. They are often used to make grooves and fills sound bigger, more dynamic, and more musical. A flam is made by playing a quiet grace note just before a louder main note. The two notes should be very close together, almost like one thicker, wider stroke. A drag is similar, but instead of one grace note, you play a quick double grace note before the main stroke. This creates a rougher, more decorated sound. These rudiments…
